Cardinal doctrine's primary purpose is communicating the fundamentals of salvation. They are deemed cardinal because without them, everything else falls apart. What good would it do you to follow every other doctrine and standard, then die in your sin without Jesus Christ? Because of the dangers of misinterpretation, we strictly forbid debate of Cardinal Doctrine among our members. This doctrine has been written clearly and concisely as well as had supporting scripture included, therefore, we feel there is little commentary that needs to be added; however, our "clearly and concisely" may not be the same as yours, so feel free to ask any questions on the cardinal doctrine you may have.
At first glance, the term "consequential" may cause images of members being punished for infractions against the doctrine to come to mind. I would like to put those fears to rest right away in this commentary. Consequential doctrine is named as such more so because violations can cause severe consequences in the lives of others, not just the member in violation. The following is a scenario and some examples of how this could play out:
Michael has been a member of the Chruch for 1 year. His son, who recently turned 14, has decided to embrace a transgender identity. Michael loves his son dearly and cannot bear the thought of telling him this lifestyle is sinful, let alone that it will lead to destruction and hell. He decides this is how God has made his son, so there's no way God sees it as sin and begins to propagate this view among his congregation. What are the consequences of Michael's actions?
First and foremost, Michael is unwittingly taking part in leading his own son to eternal separation from God. Second, we now have false doctrine being propagated among our brothers and sisters in Christ, putting even more people at risk of accepting this lie as truth. If leadership took the same approach as most modern-day churches, Michael may be talked to about his newly formed views on the matter but would be allowed to remain a member in the hopes that they would one day change. This is essentially the same thing as having a hole in the hull of your ship and refusing to plug it. You now have a breech in the integrity of your church body that is uncontrollably spewing false doctrine until the entire thing sinks.
This is the state that so many churches in modern times have found themselves in. Our no-compromise stance on the cardinal and consequential doctrine is a testament to how serious we take God's word, as well as threats to the eternal wellbeing of our brothers and sisters in Christ.
